Another brilliant Old Media idea for THE INTERNET!!! (I'm so excited!)
Seriously? If this is true, @ev & @biz, um, this is the worst fucking thing you could to to Twitter. It’s right up there with creating “Junk Mail Twitters” that reach certain demographics. (Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m sure some people wish it would.)
Does Twitter need to make money? Farming out the “Celebrity Twitterers” is a terrible idea and not even your damn RIGHT.
Charge us all $5 a month to use it, for Christ sake, but not this.
Twitter, be prepared for some of the biggest reasons everyone jumped on the bandwagon to disappear from the feeds.
This guy thinks we should all just simmer down about it though and just get back to Tumbling (which I would pay for, too.)
“I guess it’s time to go back to tumblr.”
Everyone DOES need to settle down. So far the only one that mentioned “stalking” was the Examiner. Inflammatory Conjecture, people. They haz it. The Variety report doesn’t mention anything of the sort…and if I was to put money on this I bet the celebs being “stalked” are fully in on their “stalking.”
Is it a lame idea? Probably. But I agree with Ev and Biz. Twitter is a success because it’s pretty much an OPEN Platform. Developers use their APIs to build apps, web sites, etc and Hollywood uses their community to create shows…an open Twitter is a better Twitter experience for everybody.
Update: The Examiner updated their report to make it a little more clear that they were just using an example of what they wouldn’t want to see in a Twitter TV Show, not how the show is actually going to play out. This should put everybody at ease…for now. From the Examiner:
”** IMPORTANT UPDATE: This story has generated a massive response on Twitter from people who do not want a reality TV show to destroy the free flow of communication they have enjoyed on Twitter. We agree with them one hundred percent. That’s why we used the hypothetical example in this story as a possible scenario we would hate to see. The show’s producers have not said that this is how it would play out. As of this writing, they have not yet provided any details about the new show.”
Update #2: The tracking on this is insane. The Examiner and the people who are latching onto their report like it’s the Bible are totally ruining someone’s TV deal right now. Sucks! Twitter is awesome, but it’s scary how fast Misinformation is spread on there!
How annoying and naive for the original poster to knock a new media phenom’s attempt to spread out a little and explore new areas of media (or in this case, old media) to understand the kind of value they bring to a brand like Twitter. Will it ruin Twitter? Not likely. If any of these people had been through the technical nightmares Twitter endured in late 2006, nearly all of 2007, and early 2008 they would know that if anything was going to kill Twitter, it would have been that.
This “fiery rhetoric” stuff is just silly, sorry.
